Sooke Fine Arts Show
Gage Collective members Kenna Barradell, Yvonne Freigang, Deirdre Kelly and Natalie Shumka, have been juried into the Sooke Fine Arts Show. The show will have 375 works from artists spanning Vancouver Island and surrounding BC coastal islands, and is the largest juried event in our region. It opens at 10 am daily from July 24 – Aug. 3 at the SEAPARC Leisure Complex in Sooke. http://sookefinearts.com/ This is the third year of three that I have been accepted into this show. It is wonderful to be included amongst such talented artists! I am always surprised by the pieces that are chosen by the jurors. It is a reminder that our different experiences inform our appreciation of art; that our interests are as diverse as our numbers.

Pairings #1
I am beginning to think about my new series called Perfect Pairings. Working ideas from words into paintings challenges me to find visuals that represent my thinking. I consider any number of potential representations from obvious to abstract. I am leaning toward abstract beginning with a story rock background, stones collected from the seaside. I don’t want to be prescriptive with my audience. I prefer the viewer to create a story from the painting in the same way a novel reader creates their unique understanding of a book based on their personal experience and knowlege. Today I consider a collaborative painting too. Another kind of pairing using an initial idea such as a word pairing of ‘dogma and judgment’.

Sooke Show - Sold!
This piece was sold at the Artist’s Gala! I am thrilled that the picture is going to stay in Victoria and hope that the purchaser knows the story that goes with it! I reflects opening night at the opera when the people who have money and support the local opera company are given a special reception. This woman commands the respect and adolation of that company of donators! …and she knows it!
